Mathina promotes mathematical thinking by developing, implementing, and disseminating open educational tools adequate to the digital age.
Mathina is based on story-driven experiences, in which children and young learners encounter fictional characters that find themselves in mathematical adventures. The stories bring up concepts, challenges, and puzzles that the user can interact with, reflect on and learn from.
Mathina can be used by parents to play with their kids, by teachers as a didactical tool, or directly by young learners eager to discover more maths, reinforcing the connection between formal and non-formal learning of mathematics.
The Mathina project offers the following materials for young learners, parents, and educators:
- The Interactive Storybook The Adventures of Mathina. With stories to read and interactive apps to play and learn. Stories have a recommended minimum age: from 4 years old, from 7 years, from 11 years, and from 15 years.
- The Educator’s online guide. A companion for the interactive storybook that parents and teachers can use to extract the most out of the mathematical ideas presented in the children’s book.
- The booklet Mathina’s World (pdf), a presentation of Mathina’s pedagogical principles, for parents and educators. Why fiction stories? Why these specific math topics? Why would you offer Mathina to your children?
- The Handbook for educators (pdf), with additional material, explanations, and resources.
